The Lifetime series “Drop Dead Diva” found an immediate audience by considering a topic almost all women obsess about: weight and its relation to beauty.

“As women, we are constantly told that we are not pretty enough, thin enough, nice enough people, whatever’s on your list that important to you,” says star Brooke Elliott, 36.

The Minnesota-born actress plays Jane, an attorney who wears a size 16. “I like that our show is saying you have every right to feel good about yourself. We get to eradicate this myth that beauty only comes in this one package that we’re all taught it comes in.”

“Diva” might dip its toe in the deep water from time to time, but it’s mostly a light summer show that entertains on lots of levels. Creator Josh Berman, who also writes for Fox’s “Bones,” created the show as a sort of homage to his grandmother, Deb.

“She was a 4-foot-11, overweight Jewish grandmother who acted like a supermodel,” he says. “She was a Holocaust survivor and she had this zest for life and [believed] she could do anything she wanted. I wanted to capture that idea of the package not quite looking like the spirit.”

That explains “Drop Dead Diva’s” twist — Jane, is really Deb, a reincarnated skinny girl trapped in a plus-size body. When Deb begged the angels for another chance, she was sent back as a do-gooder lawyer.

“The confidence that Deb brought to Jane really helps her,” says Elliott, who previously starred in “Taboo” on Broadway. “Jane was really insecure before, although I think she knew what good she could do in the world as a lawyer. Deb brings some confidence to areas of Jane’s life that had been lacking.”

With that confidence comes a better, if more confusing, love life. When season two starts, Jane is effectively juggling three men: Tony (David Denman), her would-be boyfriend; Grayson (Jackson Hurst), Deb’s soul mate and Jane’s co-worker; and Ethan (Devon Gummersall), Jane’s secret husband. Ethan’s so secret, in fact, that Jane has to do some sneaky detective work to figure out who he is.

“She’s going to have some ups and downs,” says Elliott. “And she’ll spend some time being single, which is fun to see.”

“One of the things we deal with is what a soul mate is and whether or not Jane/Deb and Grayson will be together at the end,” teases Berman.

In the season premiere, Elliott joins guest star Paula Abdul in a rendition of Eurythmics’ “Would I Lie to You?” complete with back-up singers and dancers.

“I turned to song and dance because I thought it was a great way to explore the character’s subconscious, so these dream sequences pop up throughout the series. And we’re very blessed to have all of these amazing singers in the cast. Brooke, Margaret Cho, and Ben Feldman, who plays Jane’s guardian angel, Fred, all have great voices,” Berman says.

So amazing, in fact, that on June 1, “Drop Dead Diva” put out its own soundtrack, to coincide with release of the season 1 DVD. That’s just in time for everyone to get caught up before season two launches on Sunday, June 6.
