OK, now it’s official – swimmer Michael Phelps is bigger than the Olympics themselves.

Over 39.5 million people in the US watched Phelps snare his record-shattering 10th career gold medal Tuesday night in Beijing – the biggest night of the Olympics yet, eclipsing even last Fri day’s opening ceremonies.

Some 7 million new viewers tuned in at 10:30 p.m., when Phelps set his record by win ning the 200-meter butterfly to become the most decora ted US Olympian in history.

Phelps added an 11th medal later.
