ARRR! Pirates return to the South Street Seaport today.

Opening to the public in the Seaport’s Cannon’s Walk (the courtyard tucked away off Front Street), the “Sea Warriors” art installation will depict 11 historical pirates — including Sir Francis Drake and William Kidd — painted on wood panels, in addition to 64 flags displaying the pirates on lampposts in the area.

Aptly located — the exhibit is on display just blocks away from where alleged Somali pirate Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse is being held — the project aims to teach people about the history of piracy while raising awareness about its prevalence in developing countries today.

Michelle Vaughan, the artist behind the exhibit, first conceived the idea while sailing in Antarctica with her husband.

“I learned a lot about Sir Francis Drake, and that sparked my curiosity about pirating,” she says.

Ahoy, mateys! The exhibit runs through Oct. 18. For more information, visit seawarriors.net.
