MANHATTAN public- access queen Brini Maxwell is going national.
The self-styled “Martha Stewart of Chelsea,” whose colorful “Brini Maxwell Show” on local cable has gained a devoted following since its debut in 1998, has been picked up by the Style network, owned by E! Entertainment Television.
Style, which is available in a growing number of New York City cable homes on Time Warner’s digital system, will premiere its own “Brini Maxwell Show” this fall, network officials said yesterday.
The network says Maxwell’s new show will not be exactly like her low-budget, local-cable show, which has been taped in her Chelsea apartment. The new show is being produced professionally in a Manhattan TV studio.
However, the new “Brini Maxwell Show” will still focus on Maxwell’s lifestyle philosophy, which centers on her devotion to the fashions and décor of the 1950s, ’60s and early ’70s.
Her public-access shows – tapes of which are available to buy via brinimaxwell.com – include such titles as “The Night of a Thousand Gowns,” “The Fire Island Episode,” “Mothballs and Birthday Cake” and “A Salute to Cheese.”
And if you haven’t guessed by now, “Brini” is a “gender-illusionist” (a.k.a. “drag queen” or “cross-dresser”) who’s well-known as much for her kitschy TV show as for her live performances in New York nightclubs.
