DANCE FEVER
WITH underground hits like “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House” and “Give It Up,” LCD Soundsystem has
demonstrated a serious knack for getting a party bumping. It’s not a surprise, considering the man behind the band – he sang and played the instruments on the self-titled record – is James Murphy, who also happens to be half of the influential New York production team DFA (Death From Above).
On Wednesday, LCD plays a homecoming show at the Nokia Theatre. The Post caught up with the eager-to-head-home Murphy, who displayed a New Yorker’s typically opinionated slant on the state of pop.
What’s an LCD show like?
Maybe it’s a little more disco than most rock shows. I probably look like a retarded monkey, and we play the songs as best we can. It’s like a Nina Simone concert, but much louder – and without all the talent.
Why take a band on tour?
Simply because touring with a band is not humiliating, whereas touring with a CD is. I can’t play a show that I wouldn’t go see, and I would not, under any circumstances, go see myself singing along to an MP3 or a CD.
You make dance music. Do you dance at rock shows?
I will dance, but I don’t think [most] bands are very fun to dance to. They’re trying to be emotive spectacle-rock. I just can’t look at it anymore. It’s like watching a 12-year-old brag about how many video games he owns.
You’re so embarassed for the kid because you know at some point, he just sounds like a f – – – ing tit and he’s so insecure that he’s bragging endlessly, and you’re just cringing the entire time. Sometimes that’s what watching
bands is like for me.
LCD landed a song on “The OC” soundtrack. Are you a fan?
I’ve never seen an episode. They asked for a couple songs and my first punk-rock reaction was: “No way man, f – – – that!” Then I had to remember that I lived in a [New Jersey] farm town and I didn’t find out about good or interesting music unless it got wings and leapt into my town. If four kids nationwide get interested in us, and through us finds a whole bunch of good music, then it’s worth it.
