James Holzhauer is back at the buzzer.
Regular “Jeopardy!” broadcasts resume Monday following a more than two-week hiatus during which the “Jeopardy! Teachers Tournament” aired.
The last time we saw Holzhauer was May 3, when the 34-year-old professional gambler scored his 22nd consecutive win with a $82,381 haul, bringing his total winnings to $1,691,008.
Now there’s only Ken Jennings’ 15-year-old, 75-win streak standing between Holzhauer and the top slot in the show’s history.
A sports betting expert, Holzhauer has awed even past champions with his rapid-fire playing style and big wagers during Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy.
His success has offered insights into both his own background and the show’s behind-the-scenes antics. Holzhauer, who once dreamed of using his quant skills to work for a baseball team, told a middle-school newspaper in Pennsylvania that longtime host Alex Trebek has a “potty mouth” off-camera.
The champ has been called a chump by some critics who feel his math skills and 95% accuracy rate make for bad entertainment. (Jennings, however, is cheering him on.)
“I always dreamed of working in an MLB front office and ruining baseball,” Holzhauer tweeted in response to a Washington Post op-ed questioning whether he was a “menace” to the show, “but I have to settle for ruining @Jeopardy instead.”
“Jeopardy!” airs at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.
