He successfully woos the girl across the street, to whom he’s written letters for the duration of the war. Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello) comes back to Alabama. His mother is anxious for him to get a job, but Eugene’s thinking about going to college, even though the admissions people at the nearest school aren’t terribly encouraging. Sgt. Lena Basilone (Annie Parisse) visits her late husband John’s family in New Jersey and gives them his Medal of Honor.
