DON’T MISS LIST
MARATHON
TOP GEAR MARATHON, Sunday, 1 p.m., BBC America
Get in ‘Gear’ – If you still haven’t gotten aboard the “Top Gear” train yet, here’s your chance to find out what the fuss is all about.
Hosted by a trio of famed British motoring journalists – Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May – the International Emmy-winning series manages to attract both gearheads and non-drivers alike through a combination of outrageously silly stunts, fantastic location photography and reviews of some of the world’s fastest and most expensive cars.
All of those things – and more! – are showcased during a seven-hour marathon, which kicks off with an episode featuring actor Mark Wahlberg as the “Star in a Reasonably Price Car.” In the recurring segment, a famous person such as Helen Mirren drives a Chevrolet Lacetti around the Top Gear test track in an attempt to break the records set by previous bold-faced names.
The marathon will also include some “Top Gear” specials, like their Winter Olympics episode – in which a Mini Cooper is outfitted with rockets and shot off a ski jump – and a visit to the States that sees the boys driving muscle cars from San Francisco to Utah. The last time they traveled across the pond, they were stoned by angry Southerners who didn’t like their politically incorrect ways.
Other highlights include a cross-Japan race between a Nissan GT-R and the 200 mph Shinkansen, a k a the bullet train, as well as a stunt in which they boys learn exactly how hard it is to drive a truck. As incentive to get his stuff safely from point A to B, Clarkson’s cargo is a load of hay and a space heater.
When three rival German car program hosts invite the British boys over to Deutschland for a friendly competition, the “Top Gear” team is faced with their biggest challenge yet: Not mentioning the war. As to be expected, they fail spectacularly at it.
