Drama mama
Everybody seems to be heading out of town for the long holiday weekend, so here’s a few out-of-town shows in case the only trip you can afford is a TV-cation:
“Treme” (Sunday, 10 p.m., HBO) Lead-in “Game of Thrones” does the unimaginable: make life in post-Katrina New Orleans seem less depressing. Although the Seventh Kingdom is actionpacked, there is something to be said for the quieter musings of these colorful characters who feel more like friends. Plus, there’s plenty of action going on behind the eyes of Clarke Peters’ Albert, who’s evicted from his bar/ home in the second season opener. Toni’s daughter is also in a dark place after her dad’s death and Ladonna is feeling the pressure to abandon her city. If the denizens’ sad state of affairs aren’t enough to draw you in, just let the New Orleans jazz lead you through this series, which should qualify for college credit in music appreciation.
“Law & Order: LA” (Monday, 10 p.m., NBC) Two episodes into the relaunch, and this limping “L&O” installment is still too Hollywood with its dramatic blue under lighting in police headquarters and “riots” in Pasadena – what, was the golf course booked? If they really wanted to make the revamped show more interesting, they should’ve fitted the boredlooking Alfred Molina with a half dozen extra arms to catch the bad guys. That Mama would’ve tuned in for.
“Doctor Who” (Saturday, 9 p.m., BBCA) Dr. Who went all-American this season, filming in Utah and premiering on the same day in the UK and the US. But don’t expect the good doctor to start waving the stars and stripes anytime soon, as this import sticks to the British humor that makes this series so fun, even if Mama only understands half of the jokes. Highlights to watch for in Whosville this season: omnipresent sci-fi star Mark Sheppard appears in the two-part premiere, and the fourth episode is penned by Neil Gaiman, author of the outstanding “Sandman” comic book series and “Coraline.”
