DROPPED PENNY
PENNY Crone is out at Ch. 5, only a year after rejoining the station.
Crone, 58, a correspondent on “Good Day New York,” hasn’t been on the air since last Friday, when she covered the transit strike aftermath for the morning show.
She had only a short-term contract with the station, where she became something of a city landmark.
Crone, a local TV staple since 1977 known for her gravelly voice, strong local flavor and quirky reports, worked at Ch. 5 for 14 years, reporting for its 10 p.m. newscast.
She left the station in 2002 and joined Ch. 2, where she worked for a year-and-a-half until being re-hired last January by Ch. 5.
A Ch. 5 spokeswoman declined to comment yesterday.
