ABSTRACT:

IT’S impossible to imagine Easter without eggs. They are, after all, the quintessential symbol for the renewal of life. The custom of decorating them for spring is said to date back to pre-Christian times. The tale of the Easter bunny hiding them came much later, from the Germans, who also paint the empty shells and attach ribbons and lace.

Ukranians and Slavs are known for their intricate egg designs. So are the Poles, but in my family the most special eggs are the ones tinted tawny brown from being boiled in onion skins. According to Polish tradition, they are placed in a basket with other Easter breakfast foods. It’s covered with a napkin and taken to church on Holy Saturday, to be blessed by the priest…
