Several weeks ago, I had to put Hound, my dear old hound mix, to sleep. Now, looking at pictures of him, I wish I had more.
Mementos of pets are hardly a replacement, but they’re a comfort after
an animal is gone. My book, “Animal House Style” (Bulfinch Press), features photographs of many of my dogs and cats. Now, thanks to a Canadian company called Echo Memoirs (www.echomemoirs.com), you don’t have to be in publishing to have a coffee-table tome about your pet.
Echo will interview you and write text to go with your favorite photos, then design and hand-bind your book. Like any publishing venture, however, it doesn’t come cheap: $2,500.
Massachusetts artist Carol LeBeaux (www.silhouettes-by-carol.com) plies the much more affordable craft of making custom silhouettes, sharp paper cut-outs exactly like the shadow cast by your dog or cat. Just send her $25 along with a clear photograph of your pet in profile.
Paws of Endearment (www.pawsofendearment.com) offers 3-D castings of your pet’s paw, made from an imprint you take with non-toxic clay and mail in. The finished product, starting at $29.99, comes with a “bronze-like finish.”
And here in New York, Lovumentary LLC (www.lovumentary.com) creates “mini-documentaries” about people and pets. These films, 10 minutes long, show
dogs and their humans in various moods and settings, complete with custom soundtracks.
For $1,200, Lovumentaries are delivered in DVD and CD-rom formats, perfect for those repeat viewings.
