SOME critics are comparing the Thai martial-arts epic “Dynamite Warrior” to “Ong-Bak,” a Thai actioner starring popular Tony Jaa. Since I hated “Ong-Bak,” it was with foreboding that I sat down to watch “Dynamite Warrior,” directed by Chalerm Wongpim. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised.

The newer film isn’t perfect, but it’s light years ahead of “Ong-Bak.”

It features well-choreographed kung fu and high production values. It also has an interesting script, involving: a man looking for the rustler who killed his parents, an effeminate prince who’s stealing water buffalo so he can force farmers to buy his expensive tractors, a sweet love story and, in a supernatural twist, an odd use for a virgin’s menstrual blood. What more can one ask?

DYNAMITE WARRIOR
