FEST’S THE TALK OF THE TOWN
WHAT do Robin Williams, Arthur Miller, Paul Simon, Stephen King and Stanley Tucci have in common?
They all have, in one way or another, contributed to the success of The New Yorker over the years and will be on hand to help the magazine celebrate its 75th birthday May 5 to 7.
Comedians, critics, playwrights, musicians and actors will join renowned authors such as E. Annie Proulx, Julian Barnes, Nick Hornby, Tobias Wolff, Jeanette Winterson and Dave Eggers for a weekend of readings, panel discussions and performances at various venues around town.
The roster of events sold out faster than a rock concert, surprising New Yorker editor David Remnick, who, with fiction and literary editor Bill Buford, assembled this virtual who’s who of literary and artistic talent.
“When we conceived all this, the thought occurred to me, ‘Are there enough people who will come out and see these things?’ Remnick says.
“In an age where everybody and everything is grabbing at your attention, it’s reassuring. Maybe the rumors of cultural impoverishment and disinterest in literary events are premature.”
There’s good news for those who missed out on tickets this time around: Remnick says the overwhelming response to the festival means he’ll consider making it an annual event.
Meanwhile, Sunday’s free poetry reading in Bryant Park is open to all.
