Can ‘Doom’ break arcade curse?
Hard to believe it’s taken Hollywood this long to turn “Doom,” one of the most addictive video games ever, into a movie. But the film’s finally out Friday, and we have to admit the casting is inspired – any movie with the Rock is a totally guilty pleasure. (Right up there with spending hour after unblinking hour playing “Grand Theft Auto.”)
Still, the video-game-to-movie thing is a dubious proposition. The games themselves gross hundreds of millions, but their cinematic counterparts tend to get blasted at the box office. What nudges them into profitability is the standard bait for geeky gamers: hot chicks with big guns.
