Oprah Winfrey’s gal pal Gayle King has joined the daytime talk show host’s school scandal investigation.

“It’s just heart wrenching that the situation even happened. It really is,” King told PEOPLE, adding that the two traveled to the school twice in one week. In fact, “Heart wrenching doesn’t do it justice,” she said.

Gayle partnered with Oprah in the $46 million education project for underprivileged girls to create the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in the small town of Henley-on-Klip, South Africa.

The school was hit two weeks ago with allegations that one of the matrons fondled a girl and physically abused other students.
