FORMER ABC overnight anchor Ron Corning is joining Ch. 5’s “Good Day New York” as Jodi Applegate’s co-host.

Corning, who’s expected to start later this month, anchored ABC’s “World News Now” and “World News This Morning”-and spent two years before that hosting “The Daily Buzz,” a syndicated morning show.

“This is really a platform where I belong and what works for me,” says Corning.

“It’s where I’m at my best, and I’ve definitely seen the same qualities in ‘Good Day New York,’ which is why I’ve been such a fan of the show.

“It’s all about being able to switch gears and being able to handle anything on a moment’s notice.” Corning says the next step for him at ABC, where he spent two years, would have been more field reporting.

“I could have done it and embraced it, but I think doing more of a morningshow format fits my morning-show personality and career aspirations,” he says.

Applegate has been without a regular co-host on “GDNY” (7-9 a.m.) since Chris Gailus returned to his native Canada last spring after less than a year on the show.

“When I knew that Chris Gailus was leaving, I asked my agent what was happening at ‘Good Day’ . . . then I heard from them about a month ago, and I was thrilled,” Corning says.

“Honestly, I’m not just saying this because I’m going to work there, but I’m the president of the Jodi Applegate fan club.

“I remember watching her at MSNBC . . . and having such an appreciation for her quirky sensibilities.”
