HERCULES wants to put a little laughter in his life – and yours.
Kevin Sorbo, who starred in “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” and now headlines “Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda” has inked a deal to create a sitcom for ABC.
“I love the sitcom format – I like the experience of doing a miniature play each week,” Sorbo told The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m not Jerry Lewis. I don’t really do the fall-down stuff,” he said. “I like the kind of observational humor that George Carlin does.
“They can surround me with wacky [characters], and I’ll be the sane one who anchors the group.”
Sorbo, who turns 46 next month, is no stranger to sitcom-land, having had small roles in ABC’s “According to Jim” and “Hope & Faith.”
“Andromeda” finishes its run this year, which will free Sorbo up for other projects.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sorbo has just started meeting with producers and writers and “is open” to a range of ideas, with something along the lines of “Coach” already thrown out there as an idea.
Sorbo starred in “Hercules” from 1995 to 1999 and has been on “Andromeda” since the show premiered in 2000.
He’s also appeared on the sitcoms “Cybill,” “Just Shoot Me” and “Dharma & Greg.”
The time frame in which Sorbo’s sitcom would air isn’t clear, although a fall 2005 airdate wouldn’t be out-of-the-question.
ABC has had a decent track record the past few years with its sitcoms. “According to Jim,” “My Wife and Kids” and “Hope & Faith” aren’t blockbusters, but they’ve performed strongly enough to warrant renewals.
Early in his career, Sorbo appeared in “Cheers,” “The Commish” and “Murder, She Wrote.”
