The Superhero and gore gurus behind “Superman Returns” and “Hostel” will join comic book geek Kevin Smith behind the scenes on the new “Heroes” spinoff for NBC.

“Hostel” director Eli Roth and Michael Dougherty, who co-wrote “Superman Returns,” will each pen an episode of “Heroes: Origins” the six-episode anthology that’s due to follow the second season of the NBC hit next spring. Roth will also direct his episode, the showbiz trade papers report.

Smith is set to oversee the first episode of the spinoff, which will introduce a new hero in each episode. One of the six new characters will then join “Heroes” for its third season.

Roth has directed the exceptionally gory “Hostel” films, along with “Cabin Fever.” He’s also set to direct the zombie flick “Cell,” based on a novel by Stephen King.

In addition to “Superman Returns,” Dougherty also co-wrote “X2: X-Men United” and recently finished his directorial debut, the horror flick “Trick ‘r Treat,” due in theaters next year.
