Happy 2004!: Ryan Adams has taken the Courtney Love route and left a cuss-filled voice mail for Chicago Sun-Times rock critic Jim Derogatis, who immediately posted it for the world to hear on //newflux.blogspot.com. Adams, on ryan-adams.org, said the phone call was personal.

Beep: “Hi Jim. Ryan Adams, just calling to say hi. Well somebody sent me your f—ing stupid bulls— review of my show … And, like, what is your problem? Like you have to come after me … You mention at the end the fans eat it up, but you’re different. You’re like the voice of reason and, like I’m bulls— because I make music like the Replacements or like Courtney Love or some bulls— -.”

And another thing: “You do this to me every time I come to town … You obviously have a problem with me, not with the music, because you can’t refute it, obviously, because it’s too f—ing good … So get someone else that gets it. Like if you have some super-jaded, horrible problem with me, because I’m overzealous or I have lust for life or I like to make a show different and interesting and like not f—ing boring and stare at my shoes, then whatever … Obviously, you’re misguided because you think I’ll never write anything that’s heartfelt.”

To save, press 4: “I think you’re incredibly petty and you’re really obviously like one of these guys who comes to gigs and just bums people out, and you stand around with your f—ing notepad … You don’t belong anymore … And you know what? I’m gonna keep coming back and you can’t f—ing stop it. And, old man, it’s time for you probably to get out of the f—in’ business.”
