IF you can’t control your child – or if your child can’t control himself – stick to Burger King before working your way up to Bouley Bakery.

Happily, Parents magazine editor Sally Lee, who dines out at least twice a week with her 3-year-old, has tips for restaurant-proofing your child:

* Bring diversions. “Books, stickers, crayons or any other quiet toys or pastimes that can keep the child occupied are perfect.”

* Order your child’s meal first.

* Walk between courses. “It helps get the wiggles out.”

* Delegate. “Take a third person,” Lee says. “That way, one person can focus on the child at any given moment, letting the other two enjoy the meal.”

* Be realistic. “If your child has a meltdown, just give it up. Ask for your food to go and leave – it’s only fair to others.”
