A collection of vintage cars and memorabilia that belonged to the late funnyman Flip Wilson will hit the auction block starting next week.
In the first of two auctions on Nov. 11, Bob Abell of the 89-year old auction house A.N. Auction Co. in Los Angeles, plans to sell a collection of vehicles that belonged to Wilson and the vast collection of Wilson’s personal memorabilia on Nov. 18.
The proceeds will go to Wilson’s estate, whose beneficiaries include his five children.
“He was so well liked by so many people in the community that it should be a fun auction” Abell said.
The vehicles, including a 1971 Mercedes Benz convertible (featuring the license plate KILLER) – that is expected to fetch between $30,000 and $40,000 – a 1997 Land Rover, and two Harley Davidson motorcycles, will probably sell for between $15,000 and $20,000 each.
One of the two bikes sports the license plate GDFOOL.
Wilson, a beloved comic, rose to fame in the late 1960s and was 64 when he died last November of cancer.
“There’s a lot of letters from President Ford and Betty Ford,” Abell said about the memorabilia.
A highlight of the sale is expected to be the “Geraldine” costume Wilson wore when he serenaded President Ford on his birthday.
A Nov. 18th auction will offer a collection of Wilson’s gold records, Emmy Awards and other memorabilia, including a photo of Wilson sparring with boxer Muhammad Ali, a Bible dedicated by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., jewelry and other more personal items that belong to Wilson.
Wilson became the first successful black host of a TV variety show when he starred in the top-rated “The Flip Wilson Show” from 1970 to 1974.
