CBS News anchor Katie Couric might want to save something for her second night on the air.

The former “Today” show host may kick off her first night as a network anchor with an interview with President Bush.

Portions of an interview with Bush are likely to be incorporated into Couric’s first evening news broadcast – the rest will be part of a CBS 9/11-themed

prime-time special, “How Safe Are We?” airing the next day.

“If there’s a lot of news in it, we may use it,” “CBS Evening News” chief Rome Hartman told The Post last night of the Bush interview.

Meanwhile, some details of the actual structure of Couric’s new telecast appear to have leaked out, according to the industry trade magazine, Broadcasting & Cable.

The early word on Couric’s telecast is that she will dominate the broadcast, introducing the leading story, conducting one – possibly two – newsmaker interviews and providing voiceovers for two pre-taped segments.

Nothing is set in stone, and there are “no format commitments,” says Hartman. “That’s nonsense. We want to do the broadcast in a way that suits the news of the day.”
