ONE of the least likely movies to get a Hollywood remake is “Solaris,” a difficult 1972 sci-fi epic by the late Andrei Tarkovsky, a Russian director with a cult following.

But the film’s getting remade all the same, with Steven Soderberg directing and George Clooney and Natascha McElhone top-lining.

Based on a Russian novel by Stanislaw Lem, the story’s set on a space station orbiting the planet Solaris.

Strange things have been happening on the station, and a psychologist (Clooney) is sent to investigate.

There he encounters more bizarre events, like the appearance of his dead wife.

Tarkovsky’s film takes place mostly on the space station, with lots of dialogue and very little action.

The distributor has yet to make the remake available to critics, so we don’t yet know if Soderberg has “opened up” the movie to make it more accessible to mainstream audiences. But he did tell Film Threat magazine that his “Solaris” is “a combination of ‘2001’ and ‘Last Tango in Paris.'”

Do they have butter in outer space?
