MTV and VH1 will telecast the global “Live 8” megaconcert on July 2, as The Post reported yesterday.

In the U.S., the concert will air on MTV, VH1 and MTV’s college network mtvU, MTV officials confirmed. The show will run on TV from noon-8 p.m.

VH1 Classic and sister country-music network CMT have the rights to showcase footage from the concert in separate highlight programming, the day after the concert takes place.

Other MTV networks around the world will carry non-live footage and hourly updates on the day of the show.

MTV’s parent, Viacom, landed the rights from AOL, which paid promoter Bob Geldof an undisclosed sum for the North American rights and plans to broadcast the concert in its entirety on the Internet.

Geldof, who was responsible for the original 1985 “Live Aid” concert, is organizing this show to highlight the ongoing problem of African poverty and debt. He hopes the event will pressure G8 nations (the Group of Eight richest countries in the world) to contribute more money to the cause.

The free concert will originate from London’s Hyde Park with satellite concerts in Philadelphia, Paris, Rome and Berlin. Tokyo, Ontario, Canada, and Johannesburg, South Africa are also joining the global lineup according to reports.

Madonna, Paul McCartney, U2, Coldplay and a reunited Pink Floyd are among stars playing in London, while Stevie Wonder is on the U.S. lineup.
