Hugh Grant has been in talks to replace Charlie Sheen on “Two and a Half Men,” according to reports.

After a week of negotiation, the star of “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Bridget Jones’s Diary” apparently backed out late Tuesday night, according to the online trade magazine Deadline Hollywood.

But the news that Grant had been pursued indicates that CBS is serious about keeping the series — TV’s top-rated comedy — going after firing Sheen earlier this year.

Sheen’s spectacular crash-and-burn just before the end of this season had led many to believe that the network would fold the show after eight seasons rather than gamble on a new star.

CBS is set to release its fall lineup next Wednesday and was hoping to find a replacement for Sheen by then.
