MONSTER MASH
WXIII 1/2
JAPANESE anime can be a thrilling visual experience, as shown by the recent “Spirited Away.”The animated sci-fi adventure “WXIII,” however, lacks such excitement, although its solid story makes for decent viewing.
As directed by Fumihiko Takayama, “WXIII” follows two detectives – a veteran and his young partner – as they investigate a strange series of accidents and deaths in and around Tokyo Bay.
Turns out the cause is a giant amphibious monster accidentally unleashed in the course of secret research by Japanese and American interests.
As you’d expect, there’s a showdown between authorities and the monster, during which “WXIII” finally comes alive visually.
In Japanese, with English subtitles. Running time: 100 minutes. Rated R. At the Empire, 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue.
