SINGER Natalie Cole may have found a quick way to get a kidney — by appearing on CNN’s “Larry King Live” and talking about her struggle with Hepatitis C.
The 59-year-old Grammy winner told King Tuesday night that she needed a kidney transplant because of her illness but was currently on a long list waiting for a donor.
But during her interview, dozens of viewers e-mailed the show offering to be tested to determine if they were a match in order to offer up their organs to Cole.
“I always felt that it was just so strange to solicit to strangers for a kidney,” Cole said, then added, “There are some great human beings out there. That’s all I can say.”
“Larry King Live” spokesman Ryan Jimenez said messages sent in to the show from fans offering kidneys had been passed along to the singer.
Cole may have contracted Hepatitis C from her drug use during the early 1980s, which she described in her 2000 autobiography, “Angel on My Shoulder.”
She said that she had not exhibited symptoms of the disease for 25 years — until last year. She is now on dialysis three times a week while on a list of nearly 80,000 people waiting for a kidney transplant.
