THE Associated Press will be the official vote counter for the TV networks and cable-news channels during the 2004 election after the old agency, Voter News Service, was disbanded following its botched vote counting in the 2000 and ’02 election.

VNS, a consortium sponsored by the broadcast networks, was, until recently, the agency that was most widely used to predict the winners of local, statewide and national elections.
