Air Bud never flew like this.

Dean Potter has already made headlines around the world for his BASE-jumping stunts, speed climbing and other outdoor adventure stunts. Now, he’s trying to make history by making his mini cattle dog, Whisper, the world’s most famous BASE-jumping dog.

Potter and his pooch star in the new documentary released this week “When Dogs Fly,” a 22-minute Vimeo short that follows the attempts to make Whisper soar over from a 13,000-foot peak in the Swiss Alps in a wingsuit and goggles while strapped to Potter’s back.

Do dogs want to fly, though? The question has already generated some controversy.

“Although both the dog and owner land safely, being strapped to a person’s back and dropped by parachute is likely to be a cause of significant stress and fear for the dog,” a spokesperson for Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told Mother Jones last year.

Potter defended his extreme man’s-best-friendship in a blog post:

“Whenever I put on my wingsuit or pack my parachute, little Whisper nestles close and begs to come along,” he wrote, according to Mother Jones.

Whether Whisper is actually the first BASE-jumping dog is unclear — but she’s definitely the first to star in her own film. You can rent it for 99 cents on Vimeo.
