NOT NUDE THOUGH

RUDY Burckhardt, the noted avant-garde photographer/painter/filmmaker/actor, is spotlighted in this documentary by his friend Doris Kornish.

It consists of interviews with the eightysomething Burckhardt, as well as friends and family members, along with fragments from his films and shots of his photographs and paintings.

The documentary’s title is an allusion to Burckhardt’s preoccupation with painting and photographing female nudes.

The Swiss-born Burckhardt – who came to New York in 1935 and started filming with a secondhand camera he bought for $17 – is certainly deserving of a documentary.

But he deserves something better than this well-meaning but fawning tribute, which sheds little light on what makes the artist tick.

Running time: 88 minutes. Not rated (nudity). At the Two Boots Pioneer Theater, Avenue A and Third Street.
