WHEN NY1 reporter Rebecca Spitz emerged from her coma, she was shocked to discover she’d been out for two months.

“She was angry when she learned [the coma] was two months and not two weeks, like she thought,” says her brother, Jake Spitz.

“She’s a fighter,” he said.

Spitz, 31, was severely injured Sept. 19 when she was hit in the head by a passing van’s sideview mirror while on assignment for NY1 in Harlem. She was in a coma until awakening Nov. 15.

Jake said Rebecca doesn’t remember anything about the accident. “She was obviously very confused [when she woke up] and, as she felt comfortable to hear more, we slowly pieced the story together for her,” he said.

“I think it’s frustrating for her because this is one of the first times in her life that it’s a ‘slow and steady wins the race’ mentality for her recovery,” Jake said. “But she’s rising to the occasion.”

Jake said Rebecca plans eventually to return to NY1. “She’s such a workhorse that she thought they’d be upset with her because she wasn’t back at work,” he said.
