ON THEIR TOES
Talk about being in sync: Next Saturday, both of New York’s top classical dance troupes are putting their best feet forward – with programs that are perfect for kids.
Catch star dancers from American Ballet Theater in a family-friendly, Reader’s Digest version called ABTKids – a fully costumed program of excerpts from the company’s productions of “Romeo and Juliet,” “La Fille mal Gardee” and “Within You Without You,” the last set to music by the late Beatle George Harrison.
The hour-long program starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. For tickets – $15 – hit the box office, call (212) 362-6000 or visit http://www.abt.org.
Appearing on Lincoln Center’s other dance stage, the New York State Theater, will be New York City Ballet’s “Carnival of the Animals,” led by John “3rd Rock from the Sun” Lithgow, who also wrote the narration.
Set to the gorgeous score by Camille Saint-Saens, the ballet is made up of 14 sections, which Lithgow ties together in a plot about a little boy named Oliver, who runs away from a field trip and hides in the American Museum of Natural History, as a joke.
Trapped there, he falls asleep and dreams about the people in his life, who become animals:
“He dreams his librarian’s a kangaroo, his piano teacher’s a baboon, and his school nurse, Mabel Buntz, is an elephant,” Lithgow told The Post.
Not only does Lithgow narrate the piece, he’ll even make his NYC Ballet debut in it – though he won’t say how:
“I’ll give you a hint,” he teased. “I play the biggest animal.”
“Carnival of the Animals,” choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, will be performed May 17 at 2 p.m., May 18 at 3 p.m. and May 22 at 8 p.m.
For tickets ($30 to $78) call (212) 870-5570 or visit http://www.nycballet.com.
