Joshua Nelson keeps kosher, strictly observes Shabbat and studies the Talmud. He also loves to sing about Jesus.

Nelson, from Newark, N.J., is an Orthodox Jewish gospel singer – and the subject of a documentary, “Keep on Walking,” unspooling tonight as part of the Brooklyn Jewish Film Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Nelson, who traces his strict Judaism several generations back to ancestors in West Africa, got his first taste of gospel from his grandmother’s Mahalia Jackson records.

Pointing out that Jesus himself was a Jew, Nelson says of his gospel, “I put it back into its Jewish context.” But he does shy away from songs that overtly refer to Jesus as God.

After tonight’s movie, Nelson will perform with a 35-strong choir and answer questions, along with filmmaker Tanna Ross.

Tonight at 9:15, at BAM Rose Cinemas, 30 Lafayette Ave., at Ashland Place, in Fort Greene. Tickets, $10. Phone (718) 636-4100 or log on to http://www.bam.org.
