PETER Jennings has received five boxes of old boots (plus some old sneakers and a prosthetic leg) from irate country music fans.

But the boots were in such poor shape that Jennings will likely not contribute very many – if any – to the homeless, as he had hoped he would.

The boots were sent at the instigation of a country radio station in Oklahoma City that rallied its listeners to protest against Jennings after country star Toby Keith was told he wouldn’t be allowed to sing his new patriotic song, “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” on Jennings’ July Fourth special on ABC.

The station, KTST-FM, said it collected nearly 300 pairs of boots.

“It was our hope to make a donation of them,” an ABC News spokesman said. “And certainly any of the boots that are wearable or usable will be donated to charity. For the most part, the boots were in really bad shape.”

The boot campaign is not expected to get Toby Keith re-invited on the ABC special, although Jennings says he’s still a Toby Keith fan and even owns a copy of Keith’s 2001 CD, “Pull My Chain.”
