POW, WOW!
WITH apologies to Katy Perry, girl-on-girl fantasies are so last year.
As much as we “love the concept of girls kissing,” says Ebro Darden, program director of Hot 97, this summer people are looking for a song to shake to. With rain and unemployment levels up and the King of Pop down, everyone is looking for a happy, easy-to-dance-to, party-vibe song, or, as Z100 deejay JJ says, “an anti-recession summer-sounding song.”
The perfect storm for a summer hit?
Compelling lyrics, a pulsating beat and that je ne sais quois summer vibe.
JJ explains that unknown element: “You find yourself doing involuntary butt-cheek dancing,” he says. “Right cheek, left cheek.”
It helps to have built-in hand moves as well, which is the case with the decidedly, um, cheeky “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas. And the band looks to have a lock on this year’s Song of the Summer with not one contender, but two.
With “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling,” from the chart-topping album “The E.N.D.,” the Black Eyed Peas have held the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, respectively, of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for two weeks running — the first band to do so in more than five years.

1. “Boom Boom Pow” — the Black Eyed Peas
(Post pick!) Why: It’s gotta get-get, gotta get-get the vote: Synthy techno never sounded so earthy. Yup.
2. “LoveGame” — Lady Gaga
Why: Native New Yorker Miss Gaga is on fire with a mishmash of ’80s glam-metal, techno and pop. “The Timbaland-like opening beats suck you in immediately, but you’re not sure if it’s Madonna, Gwen Stefani or Britney Spears,” says Q104 deejay Jonathan Clarke. That’s a good thing.
3. “I Gotta Feeling” — the Black Eyed Peas
Why: Hebrew rhymes! “Fill my cup, mazel tov, look at her dancing, just take it off, let’s paint the town, we’ll shut it down, let’s burn the roof and then we’ll do it again.” The song is exciting and has perfect summer charm.
4. “Fire Burning” — Sean Kingston
Why: “Somebody call 911,” because this reggae-pop track is burning up the floor — dance fever! The artist “brings the heat,” says Z100’s JJ.
5. “Knock You Down” — Keri Hilson featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo
Why: This R&B ballad is “something you don’t necessarily have to shake your body to,” but perfect for “singing along, beach gatherings and barbecues,” Billboardd sharts guru Silvio Pietroluongo says.
6. “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” — Pitbull
Why: “One, two, three, four, uno, dos, tres, cuatro.” Count how many times you count those numbers this summer. The Cuban-American rapper remixes “75 Brazil Street,” a beat-heavy, house-built track which itself samples Chicago’s “Streetplayer” — you get the picture. “Pitbull puts a spin on a song and adds a hip-hop feel so everyone can enjoy it,” says George Garcia, New York club deejay.
7. “Best I Ever Had” — Drake
Why: Canadian rapper Drake actually sounds sincere when he croons “You the f – – – ing best,” relentlessly, and that’s the appeal of this slow-groove R&B love song.
8. “Blame It (on the Alcohol)” — Jamie Foxx featuring T-Pain
Why: “What’s more fun than doing shots and singing ‘ack, ack, ack’ for four minutes?” asks Q104’s Clarke. If we say more, we’ll have to blame it . . .
9. “Birthday Sex” — Jeremih
Why: Isn’t every day your birthday in the summertime? The combo of slow, extended tones, subtle snaps and sexy, sleazy lyrics hits the you-know-what-spot.
10. “Know Your Enemy” — Green Day
Why: “No rock song jumps out of the radio faster, bigger and badder right now than this one,” says Q104’s Clarke.
