‘Next to Normal” — Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s musical about a suburban mother suffering from bipolar disorder — won the Pulitzer Prize for drama yesterday.

It’s the first musical to win the honor since Jonathan Larson’s “Rent” snagged the award in 1996.

After being drastically rewritten between its off-Broadway and Broadway premieres, the show won three Tonys for its score, its orchestration and for its star, Alice Ripley.

“Normal” recouped its investment after a year and in November will launch a national tour, starting in Los Angeles.

The three finalists were Sarah Ruhl’s “In the Next Room or the vibrator play,” which Lincoln Center produced on Broadway; Kristoffer Diaz’s “The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity,” opening next month at Second Stage; and Rajiv Joseph’s “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo.”

The last hasn’t been seen here but is more likely to get picked up now.
