MY FAVORITE YEAR 1982
Tuesday, 3:15 p.m., TCM
It’s the early 1950s and King Kaiser’s (Joseph Bologna) weekly variety show rules the airwaves. Junior writer Benjy Stone (Mark Linn-Baker) is assigned to babysit swashbuckling drunken guest star Allan Swan (Peter O’Toole, left) — at all costs. Lainie Kazan as Benjy’s Brooklyn mother, who wears her wedding gown when Benjy brings Swan home, is beyond hilarious. “Get Him to the Greek” is a pale ripoff.
THE GOOD SHEPHERD 2006
Friday, 8 a.m., USA
Oddly underplayed but very interesting is this story about the building of the CIA after WWII, as told through the recollections of one of the agency’s recruits (Matt Damon). The stories of torture and his inability to connect with his family amid Cold War espionage unfold as he investigates a leak during the Bay of Pigs Invasion. Angelina Jolie is there as his wife, but she is wasted.
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES 1991
Saturday, 9:30 a.m., ABC Family
Comedian Fannie Flagg and Carol Sobieski were nominated for a screenplay Oscar and Jessica Tandy for Best Supporting Actress in this wonderful tale of the unlikely friendship between unfulfilled housewife, Evelyn (Kathy Bates), and the feisty old dame (Tandy) she meets in a nursing home. As the elderly woman tells her tales of adventure in the Depression-era South, Evelyn becomes empowered. With Mary Stuart Masterson.
BRIDGET JONES’ DIARY 2001
Saturday, 12 a.m., Ch. 21
Despite complaints about an American (Renée Zellweger) playing the iconic, unmarried 30-something English heroine, Zellweger earned an Oscar nom for her portrayal of the insecure Bridget Jones. When she begins to feel nothing is going her way, Bridget tries to take control of her life by being 100 percent honest in her diary entries. Hugh Grant and the wonderful Colin Firth also star.
