ATONEMENT (2007)
BORAT (2006)
THE COLOR PURPLE (1985)
The Children’s Hour (1961)
Sun. 12 pm, TCM
After the headmistresses of a private girl’s school, (Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine), are accused of having a lesbian relationship by a student, (Karen Balkin), their lives are upended as her lies collide with the intolerance of the era. Lillian Hellman’s biting tale was shocking in 1961, and remains a great period piece today.
Atonement (2007)
Wed. 1 am , USA
Ian McEwan’s movingly tense tale, which like “The Children’s Hour,” centers on the lies and accusations of a young girl. In England before the start of WWI, an adolescent aspiring writer (Saoirse Ronan), accuses her older sister’s secret lover of a rape he did not commit. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy star as the tragic lovers.
Borat (2006)
Thurs. 2 am, USA
Sacha Baron Cohen plays Borat, a famous Kazakhstani reporter from a one-pig town who travels to NYC to discover the true America. Once here, he decides instead to take a cross-country road trip with his obese producer (Ken Davitian) to meet and marry Pamela Anderson. Hilarious to the point of insanity — especially the naked wrestling scene.
The Color Purple (1985)
Sat. 12:30 am , BET
Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover star in this heartbreakingly beautiful tale of a young black woman in the South who finds comfort with other women during a life of abuse by men. Although this Steven Spielberg movie from the Alice Walker book and screenplay was nominated for 11 Oscars, it was wrongly passed over — especially for Whoopi and Oprah.
