ANATOMY OF A MURDER (1959)

Jimmy Stewart plays a lawyer who defends an army lieutenant (Ben Gazzara) accused of killing the man who beat and raped his wife (Lee Remick). The story, very frank for its time, unravels when there’s no evidence of rape, the murderer is revealed as a violent hothead, and the victim isn’t the innocent she’s made out to be.

Michelle Rodriguez breaks out in this drama about a Brooklyn teen with a chip on her shoulder who finds she can turn her aggression into something positive through boxing. But a boxing daughter is the last thing her single, macho dad (Paul Calderon) had in mind when he sent his timid son for boxing lessons.

Jennifer Lopez is brilliant as Selena Quintanilla-Perez, a Texas born tejano singer who rose to fame and fortune after being “discovered” by her own dad when she was just 10 years old. The movie is a love letter not just to the gorgeous singer who was senselessly gunned down by a rabid ex-employee , but also to her tight-knit family.

AMERICAN BEAUTY (1999)

This is a terrifically offbeat story about an on-the-surface happy suburban family that is, however, slipping into dark dysfunction when the dad (Kevin Spacey) becomes first deeply depressed and then deeply in love with his teen daughter’s best friend (Mena Suvari). Annette Bening is the hell-on-wheels wife, and Chris Cooper is the homophobic neighbor. Five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actor.
