REEL GOOD
AMERICAN BEAUTY (1999), Tuesday, 10 a.m., TBS
Sam Mendes’ weirdly captivating story about a depressed, out-of-work suburban dad (Kevin Spacey), his insanely aggressive real estate broker wife (Annette Bening), their dysfunctional marriage, and his obsession with his teenage daughter’s best friend (Mena Suvari). Then there’s the next door neighbor (Chris Cooper) who thinks his son is carrying on with said depressed dad.
HENRY V (1944), Tuesday, 3 p.m., TCM
The Laurence Olivier-directed movie from Shakespeare’s play begins cleverly enough as a performance at the Globe Theater and then shifts into the actual story of Henry V (Olivier). The son of a legendary English king, “V” grew from carousing rogue into inspiring monarch who successfully led his troops, against enormous odds, to crush the French, at Agincourt. Fantastic production.
ROAD HOUSE (1989), Wednesday, 10 p.m., AMC
Patrick Swayze is the antihero/good who comes to town clean up the Double Deuce road house. Not just a bouncer/manager, he was a philosophy major in college who once killed a guy. Now he karate-kicks troublemakers and sleeps with the town doctor (Kelly Lynch). Great campy fun.
THERE WILL BE BLOOD (2007), Saturday, 8:30 p.m., Showtime
Loosely based on Upton Sinclair’s 1927 “Oil!” Daniel Day-Lewis is insanely melodramatic as an oil man at the turn of the 20th century who has to deal with the elements – God, religious folk, and his baser nature – as he claws his way to black gold while raising an infant. Day-Lewis nabbed the Best Actor Oscar proving that Hollywood loves a ham.
