CNN’s suspension this week of commentator Roland Martin for purportedly anti-gay tweets has not gone down well with the black media.

“Has GLAAD [Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation] Become a Bullying Organization?” read the headline of a column on the media watchdog site Mediaite.

“Roland Martin, CNN, GLAAD and the silence of black leaders” was the headline on another column on the Washington Post’s Web site.

On the Huffington Post, a blog posted by black Republican political strategist Sophia A. Nelson charged that CNN “bowed to pressure from GLAAD.”

Martin stirred up a controversy last Sunday when, during the Super Bowl, he tweeted: “If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him!”

“ish” is a term used instead of “sh-t” by otherwise polite Twitter writers.

GLAAD complained that tweet was tantamount to gay bashing and called for his firing.

Three days later, CNN suspended the commentator “for the time being.”
