ROME ON THE ROAM
WISE-guy sports anchor Jim Rome is returning to ESPN.
Rome, most recently at Fox Sports Net, has inked a deal to return to the Disney-owned cable network to host “Rome Is Burning,” which will air Tuesdays at 7 p.m. beginning May 6.
Rome, who previously worked at ESPN from 1993-94, will continue hosting his syndicated radio show, “The Jim Rome Show,” from Los Angeles.
He will also do a one-minute editorial, “Rome Alone,” that will air once a week on “SportsCenter” – ESPN’s nightly sports wrapup show – and will write a weekly column for ESPN.com.
As The Post first reported last July, Rome was expected to leave Fox Sports Net, where he hosted “The Last Word,” when his contract expired at the end of last year. At the time, sources told The Post that Rome was in talks to return to ESPN.
Rome first came to national attention in 1994 on his ESPN2 show, “Talk2,”when he goaded L.A. Rams quarterback Jim Everett into attacking him on the air by continually calling Everett “Chrissy” – an allusion to female tennis star Chris Evert.
Everett overturned a table trying to throttle Rome.
