JAMIE and Bobby Deen (left) have had little reason to leave Savannah, Georgia, their hometown and culinary back yard. With their help, their mother, Paula Deen, running a famous restaurant, The Lady and Sons, in the city’s fabled downtown historic district.

“We serve 1,500 people a day,” says Bobby Deen, 36, the younger brother. And then the Food Network, which had already made their mom, Paula Deen, a cable TV star with the show “Paula’s Home Cooking,” asked the intrepid brothers to star in their own TV show. The network wanted the Deens to travel far from home – to the four corners of the United States – to sample hand-crafted foods at privately owned restaurants and specialty stores.

They went to Nashville, Tennessee, where they sampled homemade whiskey cakes (the recipe calls for a bottle of Jack Daniels).

They savored the slow-roasted ribs at The County Line in Austin, where the owner gave the Deens hula girl T-shirts as souvenirs. For dessert, they hit the Blond Giraffe in Key West, Florida, which serves chocolatedipped key lime pie on a stick.

Twenty pounds later, Jamie Deen says he’s never had so much fun outside Savannah. He and his brother, who was voted one of the most eligible bachelors this year by People magazine, operate on a strict timetable, spending an average of three days in a city and one day per store.

So much food, so little time. Still, the Deens promise to give viewers a glimpse into an American picnic that will last all summer long.
