SCALP
SIX young people — three of each sex — get lost while hiking in the woods. (Right away you know what’s going to happen.)
One by one, they meet grisly ends — a hatchet in the back, a knife in the chest, etc. — at the hands of a psychotic scalper, and I don’t mean those guys selling Springsteen tickets.
The rampage has to do with a deadly incident at the same place way, way back in 1825.
So goes “Scalp,” a low-budget slasher flick by a multitasker named Paul Chau. Not only did he write and direct, he produced, edited, worked on the music and pitched in as a gaffer. His hard work partly pays off.
The plot is generic and often contrived. But Chau keeps the suspense and dread at a reasonable level while throwing in interesting camera work. And can his actresses scream!
All in all, “Scalp” is a worthy first film by a guy from Midland Park, NJ. Let’s see what he does next.
Running time: 86 minutes. Not rated (violence, gore). At Tribeca Cinemas, 54 Varick St., just south of Canal Street.
