The return of “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” shattered records across-the-board for ABC Family.

The teen soap, starring Shailene Woodley and Molly Ringwald, snared 4.4 million viewers Monday night (8 p.m.)–the best-ever season-premiere ratings in network history. It also smashed records in demos including adults 18-34, adults 18-49 and teens 12-17.

Its female audience was considerable and, in fact, was 10 percent higher (in women 18-34, the “money” demo) than its broadcast counterpart, The CW’s “Gossip Girl”– which it also defeated by 47 percent in total viewers.

Monday’s episode was the show’s first night in its new timeslot.
