‘SIDEWAYS,” a bittersweet road comedy set in California’s wine country, drew a round of toasts – five awards, including best picture – from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
Liam Neeson was named best actor for playing sex researcher Alfred Kinsey in the biopic “Kinsey,” while British actress Imelda Staunton copped best actress for her performance as a mid-20th century abortionist in “Vera Drake.”
The other awards for “Sideways” Saturday night went to Alexander Payne (best director), Payne and Jim Taylor (best screenplay), Thomas Haden Church (best supporting actor) and Virginia Madden (best Supporting actress).
The L.A. critics also chose “The Incredibles” as best animated feature and the Chinese “House of Flying Daggers” as best foreign-language film.
The New York Film Critics Online picked “Sideways” as best picture Saturday, with Staunton and Church as best actress and best supporting actor.
Their best actor award went to Jamie Foxx for his portrayal of Ray Charles in “Ray,” with a tie for best supporting actress between Laura Linney in “Kinsey” and Cate Blanchett in the Howard Hughes biopic “The Aviator.”
