I Am the Night | Monday, 9 p.m., TNT
In “I Am the Night,” 16-year-old Fauna Hodel (India Eisley) travels from Reno, Nevada, to LA in search of her birth mother. En route, she is invited to meet her grandfather, George (Jefferson Mays), at his Los Feliz mansion. Traveling there with a friend, Fauna is struck by the Mayan-influenced façade and repeatedly rings the doorbell. Nobody’s home.
One wants to tell Fauna, “Don’t come back,” because she eventually finds herself on the wrong side of the house’s iron gates. In real life, George, a notorious gynecologist who ran a VD clinic for well-connected Angelenos, lived here. The house, designed in 1926 by Frank Lloyd Wright’s son, Lloyd, was the setting of pivotal scenes in the series, which stars Chris Pine as feckless journalist Jay Singletary.
It wasn’t a stretch for creator Sam Sheridan to make George the villain of the piece. The notorious 1947 Black Dahlia murder may have been committed in the house. George also found himself in trouble with the police when his daughter Tamar accused him of raping her at one of his orgies. He was later acquitted of the charges and sold the house. He died in 1999.
Since those depraved days, the Sowden House has passed through several hands, eventually becoming an LA Historic-Cultural Monument in 2003. Sheridan spoke to The Post about filming the series.
Jefferson Mays as George HodelClay EnosWas it hard to film in the Sowden House?
No. The most recent owners are super down with filming. We were also at that house for an event; we had a Q and A there. I wondered what George Hodel [who died in 1999] would have thought. The feeling you get when you’re inside the house is that you can do what you want and no one will find out.
How did the cast feel about the place?
Everybody was creeped out. India didn’t really like being there. There are rooms downstairs that are 20 degrees colder than the temperature outside. There are cabinets where you can hide and watch people. It’s like a Mayan temple, a dark and scary place.
What was Hodel’s deal?
He was a failed artist. A failed but brilliant pianist. He had an IQ of 186. He had a salon of surrealists like Man Ray without being one himself. Fauna was a real person whose adoptive mother faked her own death. We were working with a lot of things that were true and were also classic noir elements.
You worked with Tamar’s daughter, the real-life Fauna, to get some of the details into the story. Why did you dedicate the series to her?
A month before we started shooting, she died of cancer. She was 66. [Director] Patty Jenkins and I sat with her, talking on the phone, doing interviews. We felt we were going to have her with us. She knew the series was happening. She read the pilot. Her daughters, Rasha Pecoraro and Yvette Gentile, were on set.
