‘THE Squid and the Whale,” a dark comedy about a Park Slope family divided by a divorce, leads nominations for this year’s Indie Spirit Awards with six nods, including best picture.

There were four nominations apiece for the other four nominees for best picture: the gay cowboy romance “Brokeback Mountain,” the biopic “Capote,” the Edward R. Murrow docu-drama “Good Night, and Good Luck” and the black comedy western “The Three Burials of Meliquades Estrada.”

Tapped for best actor are Jeff Daniels (“The Squid and the Whale”), Philip Seymour Hoffman (“Capote”), Heath Ledger (“Brokeback Mountain”), David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck”) and Terrence Howard (“Hustle & Flow”).

Best actress nominees are Laura Linney (“The Squid and the Whale”), Felicity Huffman (“Transamerica”), Dina Korzun (“Forty Shades of Blue”), Cyndia Williams (“Room”) and S. Epatha Merkerson (the TV movie “Lackawanna Blues”).

Competing for best director are Ang Lee (“Brokeback Mountain”), George Clooney (“Good Night, and Good Luck”), Gregg Araki (“Mysterious Skin”), Rodrigo Garcia (“Nine Lives”) and Noah Baumbach (“The Squid and the Whale”).

The nominations were announced yesterday in Los Angeles by Film Independent (formerly Independent Feature Project/West).

The awards honoring achievement in low-budget filmmaking will be presented in a televised ceremony on March 4, the day before the Oscars.
