STARR REPORT
They want you to know Jack (and Ali)
“Living It Up! With Ali & Jack” kicks off Sept. 15 with co-hosts Alexandra Wentworth and Jack Ford – and it’s about to launch an aggressive on-air promotional campaign to trumpet the show’s arrival on Ch. 2, where it will air opposite Ch. 7’s “Live with Regis & Kelly” at 9 a.m.
“To put it simply, one of our goals is to bring awareness to who Ali and Jack are,” says Delilah Loud, who’s overseeing the campaign. “Many people know them from their previous TV resumes. When we’re explaining who they are and what they’ve done, people need familiarity.”
Ford comes to “Living It Up!” from ABC and NBC, where he anchored “Good Morning America” and co-anchored “Weekend Today,” among other assignments. Wentworth, the wife of ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, was a regular on “In Living Color” and appeared over 100 times on “The Tonight Show” as well as having roles on “Seinfeld” and “Felicity.”
Loud says the first spots will begin airing early next month. Called “The Next Big Thing,” they’ll be soundtracked to the Supremes song, “The Happening,” “and gets potential viewers and audience aware that the show is coming,” she says.
About a week later, new spots will feature Wentworth and Ford talking about each other in a “very tongue-in-cheek, playful” way, Loud says. “In late July and August we’ll build upon their chemistry and how they work together – those spots were not scripted. That leads into ‘Phase 3,’ which goes behind-the-scenes introducing aspects of the show and how they’re preparing for the show. Then we’ll have a 10-day countdown leading into the premiere.”
Loud says the campaign is being launched with an eye toward “Ali & Jack’s” main competitor – “Live with Regis & Kelly.”
“That does factor into it,” she says. “Their core audience is women 25-54. Our beast of burden is at least to bring an awareness and to get that core audience to sample our show.”
Fuller’s brush with soap stars
Us Weekly editor Bonnie Fuller isn’t just a magazine editor – she even plays one on TV.
Fuller will appear as herself on Wednesday’s “All My Children” (1 p.m./Ch. 7) in a storyline she taped, coincidentally, on May 16 – when the Daytime Emmys were handed out at Radio City.
In the storyline, Fuller, on behalf of Us Weekly, goes to interview Greenlee and Kendall, the principals of Fusion Cosmetics on its “Sexiest Man in America Contest.” At the last minute, Greenlee and Kendall are unable to make the meeting, so two junior- level PR gals, Simone and Mia (Terri Ivens and Amelia Heinle), pretend to be their bosses . . . with unpredictable results.
“AMC” star Susan Lucci isn’t in the scene, but since she’s a pal of Fuller’s she stopped by to say hello and watch the taping.
Donald: NBC-ya Friday at Trump Tower
NBC is beginning to search for contestants for “The Apprentice,” in which raw recruits will learn the ropes from Donald Trump – and the winner will walk away with a six-figure job.
The search kicks off this Friday at – where else? – Trump Tower (725 5th) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s recommended that candidates bring a photo ID and a completed application form (via nbc.com). Candidates can also apply at nbc.com through June 24.
Producers will also be in Boston, Atlanta and San Francisco (6/ 21); Miami (6/27); Philadelphia, Chicago and Seattle (6/28); Minneapolis (7/5); and Nashville and Denver (7/12).
Last, but not least . . .
* HBO’s head of original movie production, Colin Callendar was on the Queen’s Honors List (not the borough, the British monarch) announced over the weekend. He almost got lost in there with actress Helen Mirren and Sting, who were also knighted or crowned or something.
